100 Initials...

For the start of my project I decided to start look at sleep in general. I took photos of beds and places of sleep to start with I then moved on to adding a sleeping person. I experimented with different angles such as looking down on the bed from above. I then took some shots in the studio, looking at the symbols of sleep for example eyes closed and eye masks. I then took some photos of working people asleep as well as some close up shots of a baby sleeping. I looked at the idea of dreams and to symbolise this I used feathers from an old pillow and took some self portraits in the studio. Finally, I looked at the idea of sleep in uncommon places and the idea of taking the normal sleeping surroundings out of that normality.

At the start of my project I didn't want to photograph sleep so obviously, therefore, I chose to take photos that symbolise sleep but are not simplistically correlated and associated with sleep. For example, when looking at the physical portrayals of sleep I focused on individual aspects of the face, not the whole face ,for example, the eyes which is the main indicator of a sleeping person.

I started by looking into the areas in which I sleep, and took photos of them. For example my bed, the pillows, and my bed side table. I experimented with different angles, such as from above the bed, allowing the viewer to see the subject in the bed, asleep.

I also took some photos of the morning routine, following on from a nights sleep. For example turning of my alarm and having clothes already laid out the night before. These are all symbolic of a 'sleeping routine'.

I then experimented with taking some shots in the studio. I used props such as an eye mask to illustrate sleep and have two people lying down to symbolise the positions of sleep. The lighting is significant in these photos as the shadows create depth along with the positioning of the heads next to each other which casts contrasting light across the faces.

I then looked at uncommon places of sleep. For example, at work, in school, in a library, and in a corridor. I did this to experiment with different locations and to start looking into a possible theme throughout my project with the foundation of sleep as my title.

I also took some photos of a baby sleeping. I did this as sleep is often associated with peacefulness and a deeply sleeping baby illustrates this peaceful nature of sleep.

I also experimented using feathers which is often correlated with sleep and dreams as they are what makes up the things we sleep on as well as being used to symbolise a dream like atmosphere. I shot some photos in the studio and also using the bed to further emphasise the sleep theme.

I also used a book as a way of suggesting sleep as those props are often associated with sleeping and preparations of sleep.
