For everyone, dreams occur every night, however many people claim they "didn't dream last night." This is mostly untrue. Everyone dreams every night, despite often not being able to recall our dreams in the morning. This is due to the unconscious mind which introduces itself in the environment of our sleeping state and this side of our mind is very different from our conscious mind. Therefore, when we wake our brains don't always allow us to consolidate memory of what happens during the night because our conscious mind is not present throughout our sleep cycle. However, people often remember dreams when they are vivid and interesting, along with a having a high anxiety level throughout the dream. This occurs mostly when dreams are something we don't want to become a reality. Some people call these types of dreams 'anxiety dreams'. Furthermore, many people claim to have never dreamt the same dream twice, when in actual fact everyone dreams the same or similar dreams every night, we just don't always remember them. Dreams are known for repeated themselves and reoccurring throughout our lives which often starts in the early stages of childhood.
To adopt this theme into my own project I researched common dreams.
Six of the most common dreams that everyone is likely to have at least once in their lifetime are, firstly, death, whether that be their own death or that of someone close to them.
The second is being lost, is an environment unfamiliar.
The third, is drowning in vast, empty and lonely water.
The fourth is flying which can often be a fantasised idea for people who want to achieve this in reality.
The fifth is being in unfamiliar environments, for example somewhere they have never been or seen in their life, which can often be a glimpse into their future.
The sixth is that of distorted familiarity, whereby you have an element of safety, for example a friend or family member but you picture yourself in a completely alien environment which masks the safety net of the one happy place, person or object you have with you.
I also researched through google, the meaning behind each of these six dreams to understand each one, so that my interpretation of them is evident within my photographs.
- Death~ of a friend or loved one represents change (endings and new beginnings) and is not a psychic prediction of any kind. If you are recently bereaved, it may be an attempt to come to terms with the event.
- Lost~dreams about being lost frequently symbolises the beginning of a new phase of life and expresses the anxiety of leaving behind the familiar. Your dream may also express your worries about having no direction to your life.
- Drowning~ Drowning can easily symbolise drowning in debt, social obligation, or other areas in which you are out of your depth. In particular, if you dream of someone else drowning, the odds increase that the dream represents a situation beyond your control. While many feel this dream tends to be related to emotional issues, it can also represent issues or thoughts from your past that you have been trying to suppress.
- Flying~ Dreams like this one connote liberation—seeing this imagery while you slumber may indicate that you've found a solution to a difficult situation or emotional problem that had been troubling you.
- Unfamiliar environments~ is usually symbolic of some aspect of yourself that is opening up for unanticipated potential.
- Distorted Familiarity~ often a portrayal that you have to step out of your comfort zone, either relationally or on a career basis.
